It doesn’t matter how advanced or rich you think they are, or how much you hate their whaling, they’re human beings, and when another is in trouble, in such unimaginable trouble, we do what we would want others to do for us, we help as much as we, in any way we can.

In the wake of the massive earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan, the World Food Programme has been standing by to provide emergency assistance.
Today we were called upon to help deliver water, tents, and blankets to tens of thousands of families in desperate need.

“You’d have to be a pretty heartless person if you don’t care for the Japanese earthquake, the earthquake that triggered a tsunami that went all around the pacific; i say this because its impossible to have NOT hear about this, even if you live under an imaginary rock.

Recently, their nuclear plant suffered an explosion, and so far, in Sendai, 200-300 bodies have been found, whilst in another coastal town where the tsunami hit, 300-400 bodies have been found. Japan, the country that is by far one of the most developed in our time, is now at a stand still, suffering from multiple problems, from loss of life to power outages to extreme cold to rescue work that is going to take quite a while. Children have been left without parents, families have been separated and destroyed; homes have been destroyed.

This 8.9 magnitude earthquake was the worst in Japan’s history since they started keeping record of earth quakes, and many experts are calling this the earthquake of a life time, literally; such a powerful earthquake, such intense movement of the plates, only happens once every 70-80 years, according to some experts. Though Japan did cope with the earthquake, its the tsunami it triggered that has caused them this heartbreaking, unimaginable damage, and irrespective of how advanced the country is, the Prime Minsiter himself has said that they need help from outside.

So in the words of the Beatles, COME TOGETHER, RIGHT NOW, OVER ME..

“Its an interesting process i tell you, the process of deliberation between discipline and just being downright lazy. I of course, am referring to the process of deciding between using the computer for a day or focusing on my studies…i obviously picked the former.

Whenever i see the title of this blog in my window, i feel guilty, for i’ve always neglected this blog; i’ve never paid attention, irrespective of what i said before; i never cared, irrespective of the mass amount of facts available for me if i simply take the time Google ‘World Hunger Facts’; i’ve never put my heart wholly into this cause, irrespective of the millions of charity shows i’ve seen highlighting the most touching of stories; i’ve never really been a human being, and hence, my behaviour is justified, not because i am human, but because what i do is something i don’t do alone, you do it too. You forget to care for that person you know (you know who it is, we all have a working class connection in our lives) too; you forget to let those facts you heard sink into you deep enough that they might provoke something meaningful from your side; you forget to donate after you’re done wiping your tears after hearing the story about the girl who believes that her harsh life is just a test from God, and that God will help her succeed as she fetches water from the far ends of the earth.

We are all human, and we make mistakes, and of course, not all of us are in the best of situations, situations we don’t even know how we ended up in, but why is it so hard for us to simply live together as one? To just care…why is that a crime? Why can’t we share a meal with someone, or give someone those partially new jeans that didn’t fit us quite right but we bought because they were on sale; they are odd and absurd and clichéd examples, but they’re examples, just like you can be an example of happiness, because being a good person isn’t about going to Heaven, its about bringing Heaven to you, by being happy, and happiness is real only when shared.”

The quote i used in my last post was from a pamphlet my father got whilst we were at the 6th Karachi International Book Fair from the Patients Welfare Association (PWA) stall. I know i’m supposed to be all about hunger and everything, but i have to highlight this association, because its so close to my heart that i didn’t even know it. My mother, you see, wasn’t the best specimen for reproduction; she bled a lot, before and after my birth, so much that i could’ve been wasted, and after my birth, it could’ve been her had it not been that PWA provided the blood she needed.

PWA was started by a bunch of med students from Dow Medical College as a pharmacy providing medicine for destitute patients of Civil Hospital Karachi. Now, along with that, it also provides long-term therapy for people suffering from epilepsy, diabetes, hypertension, SLE, and asthma. They also have a free Tuberculosis follow-up clinic; a Thalassemia follow-up clinic, a diagnostic clinic for a variety of things, and of course a blood bank. The blood bank started in 1982 and is state of the art, and the screening budget itself costs Rs. 10 million a year.

So all i can ask is that you somehow help the PWA if you will. I think its best to end with that quote:

“The concept of charity is giving to the less fortunate every now and then, after someone or an organisation shows you a heart-wrenching film of some sort. Celebrities do it, moguls do it, anybody with a little spare change and a thoughtful soul does it. If you fit into the last category, then i thank you for your thoughtfulness, but if you fit into the latter or former category, then i must question your tactics of how you do it. See, my beef is with the rich, its always been that way; i despise their fancy cars and spoilt and immoral children; i hate their expensive suits and big mansions, and am more prejudiced against them than anybody else. Its the same with world leaders; every time the UN has the misfortune of assembling (and it is a misfortune, because nobody ever listens to them), they all get out of their bullet-proof limousines fixing up their Chanel suits, surrounded by a bunch of guys in black suits sniffing their sleeves, and into a big hall made of marble, with maybe a little Champagne waiting for them in their coffee mugs. They pledge and they pledge, and then they leave. The rich have an even better way of doing it: “Ladies and Gentlemen, we have assembled here tonight at the Hilton hotel to help raise money for a starving community ravaged by War in Africa, so please, let us toast our Champagne to the well being of all!”….I think that conveys it well enough…

Before you go and leave this article, let me just tell you the point i’ve been trying to make; when i started writing this article, i wanted to make the point that charity isn’t something you do every now and then, but rather its a way of life; just like a person can have a Green lifestyle, a kind, loving and humane one is possible too. But now since i’ve drifted from that concept, best to explain the new topic: Rather than spending all this money on having a meeting or fundraiser in some fancy hotel, why not put it into the cause you’re blabbing on about? Rather than being dressed up in your best D&G dress, gossiping at your table whilst being served risotto of some sort, put on a bush-shirt and pair of pants and sit on the ground and eat with those ravaged folk, hear their stories, and moved to that extent that you realise the value of not just what you have, but the value of humanity.”

Just A Thought

A little silly design i made as a celebration that Russia won the rights to host the 2018 World Cup, and Qatar the 2022 World Cup. The reason i’m mentioning Qatar is because they’ve vowed, that after the world cup in 2022, they will demolish some of their stadiums, and rebuild them in 3rd world countries to help promote football.

Football, (the whole world calls it that, so stop calling it soccer you schmucks, thank you), as i’ve found, is a poor mans sport, and hence, it is the sport that unites us all. It demands physical fitness, and mental precision, both in sync; it is the sport, that can be played anywhere anytime, giving the participants more than they realise; it isn’t a religion, but another world by itself, and if you just look at it, just focus, you can see its beauty for yourself.

FIFA has always called itself a non-profit organisation, using their money to promote football in places where the kids could otherwise never have a childhood; with the world cup in South Africa, they helped raise awareness about hunger and illiteracy.

The point i’m trying to raise here is about corporate responsibility; about how multi national companies, that are rich enough to own some countries, can make the money go round in a manner that is beneficial for all

I’ll be honest, i’m not fond of math, it can be so complicated some times, & half the things i’m learning seem like methods & procedures i’ll never really use in real life, & besides, numbers don’t really matter do they? However, & there is always a however, the numbers presented to you above are numbers that you need not do anything to; you need not add, subtract, divide or multiply these numbers, or anything what so ever for that matter, for it’s all been done for you by individuals & organisations. You simply need to look at these numbers & understand their meaning. These numbers aren’t asking you whether they’re Prime or Composite numbers, even or odd, they’re simply asking you whether you understand the gravity of the situation for the people those numbers represent; whether you care for those people?

Individuals & organisations are working hard to change those numbers, to lessen them, (or increase them, depending on the situation), but what about you? How is this affecting you? Why should the well being of total strangers matter to you? Does it matter? Well, does Facebook,Myspace or twitter matter? Do your relatives & friends really care what you think about a certain film or matter? Does insulting a person who has a life but you don’t like really make a difference to their reputation? If that person has a life, they won’t give a damn about what you write in CAPS LOCK because in essence, in reality, it really doesn’t matter. So technically, what i’m writing here doesn’t matter, that is of course, until you make it matter, until you turn it into an issue that you want & need to pay attention to.

Facebook, Myspace, Twitter or what ever matter because you made them matter; Hunger, Child Deaths, War & Violence, these could matter, these problems could gain the attention they require in order to be solved, IF we give them the attention they need.

The people behind those numbers will matter when YOU make the numbers matter, when you see it how it is.”

“You have a healthy family, a home, running water, sanitation, food for the entire family; these are things to be thankful for. A fancy car, a big house, expensive stuff; these are things that don’t matter, literally, they don’t. Like in Islam, Allah forbids show of wealth, rather, we are told to use our wealth, rather than abuse it. But i’ve been thinking; my parents went through a lot up’s & down’s trying to have me, & then raise me, & if theres one thing i learned from hearing about how much trouble they went through, i learned you should be grateful. God is a very special…thing, or concept or whatever; God is the friend who is always available, who’s never busy; He’s ready to listen any time, & may answer back some way; He’s your companion through many a rough times, He’s your guide through those rough times as well. So, when you have such a friend, shouldn’t you be thankful for being provided with such happiness & assurance & blessings, rather than complain & ask for things, material, that really doesn’t matter? I know fancy cars & money make a difference, they make an image, but look at sportsmen & sportswomen, they’ve left behind legacies through their hard work, not their cash. Material, you have to remember, is material; it can be destroyed, broken, revamped, redecorated, & lost, it does not last as long as some of us may wish, & nor does the image it creates of you in society.

The world is give & take, life is give & take; you can’t just keep taking & not give something back in return; you take the facility of running water & electricity, but you give something to those providing it, don’t you? The same applies to life itself, to faith as well; God tells us to give rather than take, because it is giving that is the ultimate act of humanity, whether its giving some cash to a cause, or contributing your time to that cause, or just giving a little bit more time to the people around you, the people that matter; when you give, selflessly & unconditionally, you end up taking, taking a little piece of that person in needs heart, taking a little blessing from that old lady whom you helped the other day, taking a little bit more trust & love from the loved one you bothered to sit down & comfort. It is in giving to others that we take, that we take something that is right to take, that is the only thing we take without expecting it.

“The trait i most deplore in myself is forgetfulness, from forgetting chores to favours to names to birthday, & of course, to people. 20 million people is a big number & a lot of people; the survivors are everywhere, all around me, but i can’t do a thing, i won’t do a thing. I’ll be on my laptop, or in my dream-world, & i’ll forget about the people without shelter, clothes, bed’s, & of course, food. Why is the human mind, my mind, reluctant to acknowledge & recall the people in need? Why is the world so small to me (?) when in fact it is bigger than anything i could possibly imagine. I’ll go to bed, & go on with MY life, & not recall those children starving & homeless until theres a headline on the news about how many children have died so far from water borne diseases.—Whats the point of wealth, social status, luxury & what not if i can’t use it to help another? It just doesn’t make sense to me; everybody want’s to be a legend, be remembered, how is that possible by showing off? People don’t care about your wealth, its not relevant to them, you’re not doing anything for them. Its when you make them relevant to you that you become a legend, that the possibility of your name echoing through the generations increases. –Mark Twain said:

Final Fantasy

“I grew up watching films that told me i should be myself, & damn proud of it. They told me to be good, & be proud of it; to not be afraid of being myself, & that people will like me best when i am myself. Yet, as i have grown, i’ve found that reality always manages to contradict my childhood fantasies.

Fantasy #1: The world is a good & happy place, where all are happy, well fed & provided for, & we all have toys to play with.
Fantasy Crushed: When i realised i wanted more toys so i could impress all the kids, then i realised that half the kids didn’t have many toys. Then, with time, i realised alot of kids barely have anything.
Fantasy #2: My mommy is way better than all the other kids; shes my super mama :)
Fantasy Crushed : When i found out that not every child has a mother. Then i found out that alot of kids have mothers that don’t give a damn about them, & it still amazes & saddens to this day.
Fantasy #3: Party! Ice cream party!!! :D
Fanstasy Crushed: When i found out that ice cream was a new invention, & alot of kids hadn’t had it. Then i found out that Europeans alone spend 3 times more on ice cream than what is needed to help provide nutrition for all the malnutrition children in the world.
Fantasy #4: All We Need Is Love! Love, love, love, all we need is love!
Fantasy Crushed: When i saw nobody gives a damn about love, & the world just wants to have wars, kill each other & steal each others wealth. The perception i had that love is the strongest force known to man went down the drain when i found out about Hiroshima & Nagasaki.
Fantasy #5: Someone is actually listening to me on my blogs, reading my rants as i preach the word of the good as i go through life discovering something to share….i will not only gain success & have my writing abilities recognised, (along with maybe a publishing deal), but i’ll have a bunch of people who appreciate my thoughts & are guided by them.
Fantasy Crushed: When i realised the blogosphere is just as big as the world itself, & i’ll have to work my way up, but thats not when i was crushed, i was crushed when Justin Bieber came along; he’s the same age as me, infact hes a few months younger i think; here i am writing to raise hunger awareness, teach life lessons & learn some along the way, & he sings a stupid Chris Brown song on Youtube…& who’s performing at Madison Square Garden?

(…Sigh….)

My father told me that its important to have your inner child, to keep that inane 4 year old within yourself, for it is going to be that very inane 4 year old that is going to help you through some hard times, as long you remember her. So, keeping my inner child in mind, i will dare to dream once more, not caring for what contradictory truth reality has to offer, who knows, maybe this dream will transform into that very truth i don’t care for…?

“The common perception that only those holding public office have real power is wrong; anyone who’s grown up in a country like mine knows it goes beyond that, that anyone having wealth beyond their mean’s holds great power, & anyone with little or no wealth hold’s only the right to be abused by the rich & powerful. & believe me, those with power will abuse it, one way or another.

When one with power is left alone with that power, & the temptation’s that surround them, then corruption, on all level’s & of any kind, is bound to occur.From the politicians in public office, to the celebrities, to the elite & simply well off, all possess power, for all possess money of excess mean’s, so hence, all are corrupt, for they have no idea how to use their power, so it end’s up being simply abused.

Power, true power, need’s a problem to solve, or else it’ll become a problem itself; when we, whom fortune has favoured financially & socially, are left with excess mean’s, to our own false devices, then something wrong & unnecessary will take place; fashion brand’s, large estates, & other material & unnecessary concept’s have sprouted from people like ourselves, people with too much money, & a mind not broad enough to understand how to optimize that money. –This concept baffles me; that people who are savvy enough to know as to how to make money, fail to be savvy enough to spend it; i don’t defame a luxurious lifestyle simply from what i see, but from what i understand: If you, one who has worked hard to earn that money, simply spends it extravagantly on material that can easily be stolen & lost & destroyed, call this an investment? If i’m going to spend bundles of money on something, i mean serious load’s of money, i want it to be an investment of some sort, an investment that’ll return to me not material, but something better, something that can’t be destroyed, something that can’t be bought but earned.

The only way to tackle the problem of corruption on this level, on the level of having excess mean’s—the only way to truly invest your hard earned money—is to humble ourselves; in this day & age, images of hopelessness & heartbreak reach news channels moments after a disaster has taken place; be moved by those images, from the baby who has no family left, to the mother who lost her child, to simply the most gut wrenching of stories & graphic of situation’s; humble yourself with these people, & realise the world is much bigger than that plastic globe in your classroom, that there are people more worthy of the mean’s you, not they, possess. It is only by using our excess mean’s, by being a better person, a more humane human being, that we will feel something that no one else can unless they do same act’s: the irreplaceable gratitude & warmth of a human being in need.”

“Thats Six-Hundred-Thousand lives scared, hungry, ill & unsheltered & unprotected. They’ve gone from being in a good enough position to being in position at all, with society straining to pay attention to them. Imagine if you’d lost your house, the majority of your belongings; that computer you so cherish your time with, your comfortable bed, your TV, your fridge…everything lost, leaving only with a few things that you can carry with you, as you travel across dirty, flooded lands, with thousands of other people in the same, desperate position, with the fear that desperation may cause these very people to do something to you. Your children are crying, scared, & hungry; you’re hungry. Its been miles since you started walking, or days since you’ve been stranded on your own or someone else’s roof. The mosquitoes are getting under your skin, literally it feels. You don’t feel well yourself. & you think, ‘Where is the world? Where are my fellow countrymen? They know i’m in such a horrible state, but i see no relief of any kind, material or emotional’. Then you either wonder where’s God, or God is your only friend left. You become desperate yourself, envying those you managed to carry off more material possessions than you, thinking of stealing. Or maybe, your thinking why haven’t your relatives called; why haven’t they visited to ask you to move out of that God forsaken shelter & into their home…we are family after all?

This is, at best, what those SIX HUNDRED THOUSAND are going through, maybe even worse that i fail to depict for you. They are lacking in basic resources of all sorts, from shelter to medicine to clothes, & of course, the most basic need of all, food; they are getting ill because of thirst, they drink the water from the floods, & contract all sorts of preventable diseases. Now is NOT the time to criticise governments or holidaying politicians, now is the time for a country to prove its worth to its predecessors watching from the heavens, NOW is the time for Humanity to prove their worth to the Lord watching from above, prove that we can come together, all walks of life, the believing & non believing, the whites,blacks,Asians,Muslims,Christians,Jews,Hindus,Buddhists; that we understand the value of humanity, the value of each other.

I’m 16, & my family is not affected by the floods, but we’re in a tolerable & intolerable financial position ourselves, but i still want to try for others; i want to ask you, my fellow beings, to help our brothers & sisters, OUR children, survive this tragedy, & take it as an opportunity you’ve always wanted, that opportunity to be someone. I want to ask you to give them hope, to give me hope, that there are good people in the world, people who understand the meaning of another beyond the aspect of lustful teenage vampire love. http://wfp.org http://unicef.org

In order to keep this blog going, & all of you still discovering facts about Hunger, i have the following sites to offer that allow us to help counter Hunger, for free!

Free Rice.com : This is WFP’s own site, where you can pick from a variety of subjects. Each right answer means the sponsors give 10 grains of rice to WFP to help fight hunger. The more answers the better :)

Definition-Of.com : This is another favourite of mine. Here, you can submit ANY definition of ANY word. For every 2 words approved, Farlex, their sponsor, will donate a free lunch to a hungry child.

FreeFlour.com : Here each correct answer means 1 spoon of flour is donated to help fight world hunger. 10 spoons make a bun, whilst 100 make a loaf

SocialVibe.com : This is a great little site. Here you can pick from dozens of causes. After you pick your cause, you have to do a series of activities. Each activity equals points, which equal something for your charity; for example, my cause is Music For Relief; 10 points= 1 minute of aid work in Haiti.

HelpThirst.com : Memorise & recall the numbers. Each right answer means 1 cup of water donated to World Vision.

FreePoverty.com : A geographical quiz where each correct answer equals 10 cups of water donated on your behalf.

FACT:

A Child Dies Every 6 Seconds

Can you please be shocked? That is it possible for a child to die EVERY 6 SECONDS? Alright, maybe its not 6 seconds, lets make it 10, so thats what? 6 children lifeless in 1 minute? I, personally, don’t care if this fact is true to the bone or not, i don’t care at all; as long as it helps to make me a more humane human being, a better person, as long as it makes me care for others, i’ll believe it to the core.

FACT:

Europeans spend 3 times the amount needed to give all the undernourished small children in the world the nutritious foods they need on… ice cream.

How is it, that we, yes us folks so blessed with everything from food to shelter to love & clothing to unnecessary necessities like the internet & cell phones, are so heartless that when we hear of people dying, children dying, from the most preventable of causes, still fail to be dumbfounded? Why are we so ignorant? So forgetful of how big the world really is? Of how many people there really are in the world? The world is never that small, its really quite big, with a variety of people in a variety of situations. My personal belief is, we were put on this planet to do something, to make something of our lives, something more than buy ice cream…

“Here are ten reasons why the world should face the challenge of ensuring that all the world's inhabitants receive adequate nutrition:

1. Save lives

Poor nutrition is the largest single contributing factor to child mortality, more than HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria combined. It is the underlying cause of more than one-third of deaths of children under five. That's 3.5 million a year.

2. It’s doable

We have the knowledge, ability and means to prevent child under-nutrition in developing countries. According to the World Bank, US$3.6 billion would give all the undernourished small children in the world the nutritious foods they need.

3. Irreversible effects

Without the right nutrition in the first two years of life, a child’s physical and mental development is compromised irreversibly. This is recognised by medical science and is stated explicitly in an often-cited 2008 article in

4. Key in emergencies

Getting vital nutrients to the hungry in emergencies means you can save more lives. After an earthquake such as the one in Haiti recently the threat of malnutrition is always lurking as people struggle to find food

5. Stave off disease

Malnourished bodies are more vulnerable to diseases like malaria and tuberculosis. In fact, the health effects of under-nutrition are responsible for more than one-third of childhood deaths and 11 percent of the world's disease burden

6. Prevention best

Acting before malnutrition becomes severe makes sense. It costs $40-80 per child, per year, for a complementary food intervention to prevent it. Compare that to the $200 it costs to treat just one episode of severe malnourishment.

7. Reduce stunting

Chronic undernourishment often results in stunting – or lower than average growth. It afflicts nearly 200 million children in the developing world (UNICEF), and many more are at risk

8. The economic cost

Malnutrition has a significant economic cost – one study of Central America and the Dominican Republic found that economic losses due to child under-nutrition cost an estimated $6.7 billion in one year alone, representing up to 11.4 percent of a nation’s GDP.

9. New products

There is a range of simple solutions now available for fighting malnutrition. For example, micronutrient powders, or ‘Sprinkles’, are sachets containing a powder that can be sprinkled onto food to ensure people get all the micronutrients they need. They cost a few cents each.

10. Building foundations

Combating malnutrition means ensuring that those in the next generation – the very future of our planet – are able to reach their full potential by having healthy minds and bodies

I am officially a Hunger Blogger (as i call us Blogger’s Against Hunger), & this is officially my hunger awareness blog, established in the hopes that as a Hunger Blogger, my own self imposed duties are fulfilled.
